More than 200 visitors were given a glimpse behind the hoardings of major construction projects across the South of England as part of a series of Open Doors Week events hosted by Beard.
From exploring cutting-edge digital surveying technology to trying their hand at bricklaying, attendees discovered the vast range of skills and disciplines that shape the built environment.
Through hands-on practical sessions, dedicated learning zones, and expert talks covering archaeology, architecture, and zoology, we showcased the breadth of opportunities within the construction industry.
A highlight for visitors to Bristol Zoo and Wadswick Green in Swindon was the chance to see ‘SPOT the robot dog’ in action. This agile mobile robot, designed for terrain assessment and site inspections, can be operated manually or autonomously, and demonstrated the future of construction technology.
At Bristol Zoo, attendees enjoyed demonstrations from specialists at KOREC Group, who highlighted the importance of digital surveying in modern construction. They introduced visitors to cutting-edge tools such as the Trimble X9 Laser Scanner, Trimble Site Vision, and the Trimble S7 Total Station.

We opened the doors to eight sites across each of our offices, including:
- Bristol Zoo: construction of a visitor centre, gorilla house, and landscaping of outdoor forest area for the African Forest.
- Hertford College Library: works include a new basement library below the quad, Old Chapel and West Range building whilst underpinning and protecting the Old Chapel.
- Hilsea Lido: renovation of the community facilities for Portsmouth City Council.
- Marlborough College Newton Building: construction of five new teaching laboratories and a physics preparation room.
- Phyllis Tuckwell Memorial Hospice: construction of an 18-bedroom care facility with associated facilities.
- St John’s College, Pusey Lane: renovation of garages and accommodation to create 33 Passivhaus student residences.
- Swindon Health Hydro: restoration of the Grade II* listed Health Hydro, including new plant rooms and dedicated gym space.
- Wadswick Green: 45 luxury retirement living apartments, with communal areas.
This wouldn’t have been possible without the hard work of our site teams, consultants, and supply chain partners, who were generous with their time and expertise, so a huge thank you to everyone involved.

Fifteen schools and colleges brought students to the events, giving young people hands-on experience and insights into careers in construction. Sessions were also open to the public, welcoming local communities and construction enthusiasts.
Open Doors also encourages career changers and members of the public to experience a “live” construction project in their local community. We all know the impact this can have and the powerful first impression it can make.
